Edmonton Oilers Hockey Facts
- The Edmonton Oilers joined the NHL as an expansion team in 1979. They were one of four teams added to the league that year, along with the Hartford Whalers (now the Carolina Hurricanes), Winnipeg Jets (now the Arizona Coyotes), and Quebec Nordiques (now the Colorado Avalanche).
- The Oilers have won the Stanley Cup five times in their history, all within a span of seven years. They won championships in the 1983-1984, 1984-1985, 1986-1987, 1987-1988, and 1989-1990 seasons.
- The team’s colors are royal blue, orange, and white. Their logo features an oil drop with the word “Oilers” written in a diagonal slant.
- Wayne Gretzky, widely regarded as the greatest hockey player of all time, played for the Oilers from 1979 to 1988. He was the centerpiece of the team’s success, winning four Stanley Cups with the Oilers and setting numerous NHL records.
- The Oilers’ home arena is Rogers Place, located in Edmonton, Alberta. It opened in 2016 and has a seating capacity of approximately 18,500 for hockey games.
- Hunter the Canadian Lynx is the Oilers’ mascot. Hunter entertains fans with high-energy performances during home games and community events.
- The Oilers had a dominant period in the 1980s, known as the “Dynasty Era.” Led by Gretzky, the team boasted a roster of talented players and won five Stanley Cups during that decade.
- In the 2016 NHL Draft, the Oilers selected Connor McDavid with the first overall pick. McDavid quickly established himself as one of the league’s most dynamic players and has since become the face of the franchise.
- The Oilers have retired several jersey numbers to honor their greatest players. Wayne Gretzky’s number 99 was retired league-wide, while other notable players with retired numbers include Mark Messier (11), Glenn Anderson (9), and Jari Kurri (17).
- The Oilers have a passionate and loyal fan base known as “Oil Country.” They fill Rogers Place for home games and support the team with great enthusiasm, creating a lively and electric atmosphere.
