Ottawa Senators Hockey Facts
- The Ottawa Senators were founded in 1992 and joined the NHL as an expansion team in the 1992-1993 season. They were the second NHL team to bear the name “Ottawa Senators,” with the original Senators franchise playing from 1917 to 1934.
- The modern Senators have yet to win the Stanley Cup in their history. They did, however, reach the Stanley Cup Finals in the 2006-2007 season but were defeated by the Anaheim Ducks.
- The team’s colors are red, black, and white. Their logo features a side profile of a Roman centurion wearing a senatorial helmet.
- Daniel Alfredsson, one of the most beloved players in Senators history, played for the team from 1995 to 2013. He served as the team’s captain for over a decade and holds numerous franchise records.
- The Senators’ home arena is the Canadian Tire Centre, located in Ottawa, Ontario. It has a seating capacity of approximately 18,500 for hockey games.
- Spartacat is the Senators’ mascot. Spartacat is a lion character known for his playful interactions with fans during home games and community events.
- The Senators had a memorable playoff run in the 2016-2017 season, reaching the Eastern Conference Finals. They were one goal away from reaching the Stanley Cup Finals but were ultimately eliminated by the Pittsburgh Penguins in double overtime of Game 7.
- Erik Karlsson, a former Senators captain and defenseman, is considered one of the best players in franchise history. He won the Norris Trophy (awarded to the league’s top defenseman) twice during his tenure with the Senators.
- The Senators have retired the number 8 in honor of Frank Finnigan, who played for the original Senators franchise from 1923 to 1934. Finnigan was one of the team’s top goal scorers during his time with the organization.
- The Senators have a dedicated and passionate fan base, known as the “Sens Army.” They support the team with great enthusiasm, especially during the Battle of Ontario rivalry games against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
