Calgary Flames Hockey Facts
- The Calgary Flames originated as the Atlanta Flames, an expansion team that joined the NHL in 1972. They relocated to Calgary, Alberta, in 1980.
- The Flames have won the Stanley Cup once in their history, during the 1988-1989 season. They defeated the Montreal Canadiens in six games to capture the championship.
- The team’s colors are red, yellow, and black. Their logo features a flaming “C” representing Calgary.
- Jarome Iginla, one of the greatest players in franchise history, played for the Flames from 1996 to 2013. He holds numerous team records, including most goals, assists, and points.
- The Flames’ home arena is the Scotiabank Saddledome, which is located in Calgary. It is known for its unique saddle-shaped roof and has a seating capacity of approximately 19,000 for hockey games.
- Harvey the Hound is the Flames’ mascot, known for his distinctive appearance with a large tongue and wagging tail. He has been entertaining fans since 1983 and was the first mascot in NHL history.
- In 1986, the Flames reached the Stanley Cup Finals but lost to the Montreal Canadiens in five games. However, they bounced back the following season to win the championship.
- The Flames have had several players win major individual awards. Lanny McDonald won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the Most Valuable Player of the playoffs in the 1988-1989 season, while Al MacInnis won the Norris Trophy as the league’s top defenseman in 1989 and the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2003.
