Edmonton Oilers Hockey Facts

  1. The Edmonton Oilers joined the NHL as an expansion team in 1979. They were one of four teams added to the league that year, along with the Hartford Whalers (now the Carolina Hurricanes), Winnipeg Jets (now the Arizona Coyotes), and Quebec Nordiques (now the Colorado Avalanche).
  2. The Oilers have won the Stanley Cup five times in their history, all within a span of seven years. They won championships in the 1983-1984, 1984-1985, 1986-1987, 1987-1988, and 1989-1990 seasons.
  3. The team’s colors are royal blue, orange, and white. Their logo features an oil drop with the word “Oilers” written in a diagonal slant.
  4. Wayne Gretzky, widely regarded as the greatest hockey player of all time, played for the Oilers from 1979 to 1988. He was the centerpiece of the team’s success, winning four Stanley Cups with the Oilers and setting numerous NHL records.
