Seattle Kraken Hockey Facts

  1. The Seattle Kraken joined the NHL as an expansion team in 2021, becoming the league’s 32nd franchise. They are the first NHL team based in Seattle.
  2. The team’s name, “Kraken,” was inspired by a mythical sea creature from Scandinavian folklore. The Kraken represents the deep connection between Seattle and the ocean.
  3. The Kraken’s team colors are deep sea blue, ice blue, boundless blue, shadow blue, and red alert. These colors were chosen to represent the ocean, the mountains, and the spirit of the Pacific Northwest.
  4. The Kraken play their home games at Climate Pledge Arena, located in Seattle. The arena is undergoing renovations and is expected to be one of the most sustainable sports and entertainment venues in the world.
  5. The Kraken’s inaugural season was in the 2021-2022 NHL season. They made their debut as the first NHL team in Seattle since the Seattle Metropolitans, who played from 1915 to 1924.
  6. The Kraken unveiled their team logo and jerseys in July 2020. The primary logo features an intimidating, tentacled Kraken with the Space Needle incorporated into its design.
  7. Ron Francis was named the Kraken’s first general manager. Francis is a former NHL player and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2007.
  8. The Kraken made their first-ever NHL Entry Draft selections in July 2021. They selected center Matthew Beniers with the second overall pick.
